Description
This is an Academic Advisor I position in the college of Business and Analytics. This position requires a broad understanding of university and college policies. Many of the position's duties and responsibilities require frequent collaboration with prospective students, students, faculty, staff; and student support services. This position requires a large degree of independent discretion and judgment in terms of student advisement and records management, registration and assessment as it relates to admission and compliance with University requirements, and referrals.
This position requires the ability to multi-task; to verify compliance for various degree programs; to remain current on academic/degree program changes; to remain current on university and/or college policy changes; remain current on career options and job placement for various degree programs; and to remain current on best practices within the field of advisement.
The target salary offer for this position is $29,256.00 - $37,008.00 annually. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity.
Examples of Duties
Promote an inclusive environment in which all people are valued, supported, and respected.
Establish a unique relationship with each student that focuses on interests, abilities, and values that facilitate career decision-making during the academic advisement process.
Assist students in developing an educational plan that relates to their choice of degree program.
Assist students in gaining a basic understanding of the College's admission requirements, registration process, and processes that need to be completed by the student (e.g. math placement testing, applying for graduation).
Assist students in interpreting and understanding placement scores, program curricula, and prerequisites.
Have a working knowledge of the degree requirements and pre-requisites needed for the degree programs assigned.
Have a working knowledge of the University Core Curriculum requirements and how it is tailored to the degree programs assigned.
Teach students how to use the Banner Self-Registration (SSB) to build and manage a class schedule.
Teach students how to use Degree Works as a degree audit tool in order to track progress toward a degree.
Effectively utilize all platforms including, but not limited to, calendaring, electronic advising notations, reports, and other systems as required.
Teach students how to use Degree Works to perform "what-if" scenarios in order to explore other degree options.
Utilize student information systems to view and interpret/evaluate student records, examination scores, and transcripts to facilitate academic advisement and course registration, to track progress towards degree, and to process graduation clearances.
Make referrals to appropriate campus offices and/or support programs in response to the academic and/or personal needs of students.
Maintain academic advising communications and records in compliance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). 15. Maintain compliance with all mandatory training program requirements.
Participate in retention and recruitment initiatives as assigned.
Participate in on- and off-campus orientation, advisement, and open house functions as assigned.
Participate in professional development programs, advisement meetings, technology and professional development workshops as assigned.
Coordination of receiving and distributing syllabi for articulation consideration.
Perform other tasks as needed and/or assigned to enhance services of Academic Advisement and support the institutional mission.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelors Degree by date of hire and strong interpersonal communication skills.
Experience within a postsecondary environment; such as academic advising, mentoring, or counseling undergraduate students or closely related experience.
Experience using basic Microsoft Office programs.
Strong written and oral communication skills
Preferred Qualifications: An ability to communicate positively and effectively with undergraduate students of various backgrounds.
Experience in Academic Advising within a college setting.
Experience using MS Office software applications to produce written correspondence and to create and maintain spreadsheets.
Demonstrated ability to work with students, staff, and faculty.
Capacity to work independently to accomplish tasks and projects.
